A little about Lewes…

The Battle of Lewes took place here in 1264.

Lewes is situated where the River Ouse passes through a narrow opening in the east-west line of the South Downs.

The town has many important old buildings. These include Lewes Castle, the remains of Lewes Priory, Bull House (where Thomas Paine lived), Southover Grange and its public gardens, and a 16th-century timber-framed Wealden hall house called Anne of Cleves House. It got this name because it was part of Anne of Cleves’ divorce deal with Henry VIII, even though she never actually lived there.

The Sussex Archaeological Society owns and looks after Anne of Cleves House and the castle. Virginia Woolf, a writer, owned the Round House, an isolated old windmill in Pipe Passage.
